Cocaine facts
World Cocaine Consumption
Cocaine is one of the world's most widely consumed illicit drugs, with major markets in Europe and Asia. North America and in Europe.
- North America :
- Visit United States remain the world's largest cocaine market. By 2021, around 5.2 million of people reported having used cocaine in the past year, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).
- Although this figure is slightly lower than in 2000, consumption remains a cause for concern, particularly in large cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Miami.
- Europe :
- Cocaine consumption in Europe has increased significantly over the last two decades. According to theEuropean Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA)approximately 3.5 million of European adults used cocaine in 2021.
- Countries with the highest consumption includeSpainthe United Kingdomthe Netherlands and theGermany. Spain, in particular, is considered the gateway to Europe for cocaine, due to its geographical proximity to South America.
- Other regions :
- Cocaine consumption is also on the rise in regions such asAustralia, l'West Africa and parts of theAsiaalthough at lower levels than in North America and Europe.
Cocaine in Culture and Society
Cocaine has a rich and complex history, deeply rooted in the indigenous cultures of South America and influencing modern popular culture.
- Traditional use :
- Coca leaves have been used for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples of the Andes for their stimulating and medicinal properties. They were chewed or brewed into tea to combat fatigue, hunger and the effects of altitude.
- Today, in Bolivia and Peru, the traditional consumption of coca leaves remains legal and an integral part of local culture.
- Influence in Popular Culture :
- Cocaine has often been glamorized in film, music and literature. Films such as Scarface (1983) and Blow (2001) have helped shape the image of cocaine as a symbol of power and rebellion.
- In music, artists like Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston and Pablo Escobar (whose lives inspired many works) have been associated with cocaine use, reflecting its impact on society.
- Illegal markets and crime :
- The illegal cocaine trade generates billions of dollars every year, fuelling international criminal networks. According to theUNODCthe global cocaine market is estimated at more than 100 billion dollars per year.
- Violence linked to cocaine trafficking remains a major problem in producer and transit countries, such as Argentina and Brazil. Mexico and Central American countries.
The most memorable film is Blowstarring Johnny Depp.
Eric Clapton sang the song "Cocaine", the video of which you can see on youtube.
World Cocaine Report 2023
I would like to highlight the main theses of the report:
Concentration in established markets increases expansion potential.
In established cocaine markets, the proportion of the general population using the drug is high. But these markets only cover around a fifth of the world's population.
If prevalence in other regions rises to that of established markets, the number of users worldwide would increase considerably, due to the size of the underlying population.
This type of market convergence has already occurred in Western and Central Europe, where purity levels and prices have harmonized with those in the United States, although the prevalence of cocaine consumption in Western and Central Europe has not yet reached US levels.
Other points highlighted in the report
- The "Southern Cone" route becomes the main departure point for cocaine destined for Europe
- Concentration in established markets paves the way for strong expansion
- Africa's role in the global supply chain is growing
- Southeast Europe consolidates its position as a transit region
- Technological advances boost sea smuggling

Hello everyone. My name is Nicole and I'm a molecular biologist.
Last spring, I launched a Telegram channel dedicated to science and medicine. On this channel, I strive to demystify various concepts, carry out analyses of drugs and dietary supplements, and explain complex subjects in a clear and accessible way.
I've been a Pikabu reader for a long time, but hadn't yet dared to publish. My friend Pikabushnik assured me, however, that this type of content is appreciated here and that my articles would be well received. It's thanks to @aelir1's encouragement that I'm publishing my first post today. If it meets with a good reception, I'll be happy to share more.
Important: this post is purely informative, with no appeal or attempt at propaganda.
History of cocaine
The first users of cocaine were the Amerindians, who chewed coca leaves, where cocaine is found. The plant was then introduced to Europe, where, in the mid-1800s, the German chemist Niemann isolated cocaine hydrochloride (cocaine in salt form). It began to be used as an anaesthetic, but doctors discovered that its effects were not limited to anaesthesia, and that it had a very pleasant side effect: euphoria. And people were seduced.
Little did the harmless plant know that one day it would become man's best friend.
In the 1880s, cocaine was not only considered totally harmless, but almost a universal remedy, and was sold in the form of elixirs and tonics. The most popular tonic of the time was Mariani wine - a blend of Bordeaux and cocaine that had everyone, including the Pope, hooked.
Shortly afterwards, American William Pemberton invented his own version of Mariani wine: French Wine Coca, with the addition of damiana extract. Later, wine and cocaine were removed from the composition, cola nuts were added as a source of caffeine, the product was carbonated, and thus Coca-Cola was born.
Coca-Cola used to be a happy drink.
After the 1800s, cocaine use declined due to its inclusion on the list of narcotic substances. The next peak of massive use came in the 1980s. At the same time, another, much more powerful and dangerous product appeared: freebase.
Freebase
The problem with cocaine hydrochloride is that it can't be smoked, due to the high melting point of the salt. Heating it up is no problem, but at 200°C, there's not much cocaine left. However, cocaine salt can be neutralized with a base to transform it into almost pure cocaine, which has a lower melting temperature and is suitable for smoking. This process is called freebasing.
Freebasing was not only practiced by drug dealers, but also by home users, transforming powder into smokable crystals. The danger of this process lay in the fact that highly flammable substances were used, leading to a well-known incident where famous comedian Richard Pryor accidentally burst into flames during freebasing and spent six months recovering in hospital. So people started using baking soda and water instead of flammable substances - thus obtaining crack. This method is very simple but dirty: the final product contains impurities.
Crack
Crack enjoyed a frenzied popularity among all socio-economic classes. It was a cheap product with a powerful and, above all, fast-acting effect.
When smoked, cocaine reaches the brain within 8 seconds, producing a powerful feeling of euphoria. The effect also ends quickly, and after 5 minutes, you feel normal and want to smoke again. It's an ideal scenario for drug dealers, but less ideal for the user. This mode of consumption is considered the most dangerous because of the strong dependency it engenders.
How does cocaine affect the brain?
- Cocaine blocks the transmission of pain signals, which explains why it was first used as an anesthetic.
- Cocaine increases the amount of dopamine and serotonin in the space between neurons.
What does this mean?
In that post, I briefly explained how the brain works (and how amphetamines and MDMA work). Here, I'll explain it in a little more detail.
Our brain is made up of many nerve cells (neurons), which must exchange information if you are to be a viable being. Each neuron has dendrites - short extensions that receive information - and axons, long extensions that transmit information. The place where the dendrite and axon meet to transmit information is called the synapse. Basically, it's an empty space.
Neuron A sends the information in the form of a bubble containing a neurotransmitter (a substance that can excite or inhibit neurons), and this bubble travels across the space between the two neurons to bind to a receptor on the surface of neuron B. Neuron B receives the chemical signal (information). This signal is transformed into an electrical signal, which travels down the axon of neuron B and is converted into a neurotransmitter, transmitted to neuron C. And so on.
The neurotransmitters released by the axons simply bind to the receptor, exciting or inhibiting the B neuron. What happens to them after signal transmission? In general, they are either destroyed by specific enzymes or returned to neuron A.
Thus, cocaine blocks the "gates" of neuron A, and neurotransmitters (in particular dopamine and, to a lesser extent, serotonin) cannot return. Dopamine accumulates in the synapse and over-stimulates neuron B, leading to the effects that follow.
